Darwin Stands with Ukraine: A Gathering for Freedom and Justice
The Darwin community unites in a powerful display of support for Ukraine, demonstrating solidarity and commitment to freedom
When Darwin Said "We Stand With Ukraine": A Day That Moved a Nation
The sun rose over Mindil Beach in Darwin, casting golden light across the gathered crowd. By the time the first speaker took the microphone, thousands of people had assembled—Ukrainian-Australians, Indigenous locals, government representatives, business owners, families with children, elderly couples walking slowly with Ukrainian flags in their hands. They had come from every corner of the Northern Territory, united by a simple but powerful message: Darwin stands with Ukraine.
A Gathering Unlike Any Other
This was not the first time Darwin had shown its support for Ukraine. But something about this gathering felt different. Perhaps it was the weight of three years of war. Perhaps it was the knowledge that the conflict showed no signs of ending. Perhaps it was simply that the community had grown—new families had arrived, new friendships had formed, new connections had been made between Ukrainians and Australians who had never before understood what it meant to be displaced from one's homeland.
What began as an organized rally transformed into something more profound: a celebration of community, a demonstration of solidarity, and a powerful statement that the people of Australia's tropical north would not look away while Ukraine fought for its survival.
The Sound of Ukraine
The gathering opened with traditional Ukrainian music, performed by a small ensemble that had traveled from Adelaide for the occasion. The haunting melodies of bandura filled the air—songs of love and loss, of homeland and longing, of a Ukraine that exists both in memory and in the hearts of everyone present.
As the music played, children wearing yellow and blue ran between the legs of adults, waving small flags. Elderly women stood with tears streaming down their faces, the melodies unlocking memories of villages they had left decades ago and families they had lost touch with. Australian onlookers watched with visible emotion, many experiencing Ukrainian culture for the first time.
Voices of Experience
The speeches that followed gave voice to the diverse experiences of those gathered:
A Refugee’s Testimony
"When I first arrived in Darwin, I knew no one," said Oksana, a mother of three who fled Kyiv in the early days of the invasion. "I did not speak English well. I did not understand how Australian systems worked. I was lost."
She described the isolation of those first months—the fear for family still in Ukraine, the guilt of being safe while her homeland burned, the overwhelming challenge of rebuilding a life from nothing.
"But then I found this community," she continued, her voice strengthening. "UAANT connected me with other Ukrainians. Australians reached out with offers of help. My children started school and were welcomed by teachers and classmates. I found a job where my employer understood my situation."
Today, Oksana volunteers at every UAANT event, helping new arrivals navigate the challenges she once faced. "I cannot fight in Ukraine," she said. "But I can fight for Ukraine here. I can make sure my community knows we have not been forgotten. I can make sure my children grow up knowing who they are and where they come from."
An Australian’s Perspective
Not all the speakers were Ukrainian. Peter, a lifelong Darwin resident and small business owner, spoke about why he had come to stand with Ukraine.
"I have watched this war unfold from my living room," he said. "Every night, I see the news. Every night, I see innocent people dying. And every night, I ask myself: what can I do?"
He described learning about Ukrainian culture through his employees—one of whom was Ukrainian—and being moved by their stories of family members still in Ukraine. "I cannot imagine leaving my home, my family, everything I know, because someone decided to take my country from me," he said. "But I can stand here today and say: we see you. We hear you. And we will not look away."
Political Unity
The gathering also drew politicians from across the political spectrum, united in their support for Ukraine. Representatives from local, Territory, and federal governments took turns at the microphone, each affirming Australia's commitment to standing with Ukraine.
The presence of Indigenous leaders carried particular significance. The Larrakia people, traditional owners of the Darwin land, have their own history of resisting invasion and preserving culture against impossible odds. Their presence at a gathering supporting another nation's right to exist freely resonated deeply with attendees.
Symbols That Speak
The visual elements of the gathering carried profound meaning:
A Sea of Blue and Yellow
Flags rippled throughout the crowd—thousands of them, small and large, held by hands both Ukrainian and Australian. The blue and yellow colors that represent Ukraine filled the horizon, a visible reminder that this was not just a local event but part of a global movement.
Flowers of Hope
Sunflowers—Ukraine's national flower—adorned the speaking area. These weren't just any flowers; they had been grown locally by an Australian farmer who had learned about their significance and wanted to contribute to the gathering. Their bright yellow petals stood in stark contrast to the solemnity of the occasion, symbolizing hope even in the darkest times.
The Flame of Memory
A memorial area featured photos of Ukrainian soldiers who had given their lives defending their country. Candles burned steadily beside each photograph, tended by volunteers who stood watch throughout the event. Visitors filed past silently, paying their respects to heroes they would never meet but whose sacrifice they would never forget.
Voices United
The gathering reached its emotional peak when the entire crowd—Ukrainians and Australians together—sang the Ukrainian national anthem. The words, unfamiliar to most Australians present, were still sung with feeling. Some had learned the melody specifically for this moment. Others simply hummed along, moved by the emotion of those around them.
The anthem concluded with thunderous applause, followed by a moment of silence for all those who had lost their lives in the conflict. In that silence, the reality of what was happening in Ukraine felt closer than ever.
The Impact Reaches Far
This gathering accomplished more than raising awareness:
Funds for the Front
The event raised significant funds for humanitarian aid to Ukraine—money that would go to medical supplies, food packages, and support for families displaced by fighting. Local businesses donated goods and services, community members opened their wallets generously, and even children contributed their pocket money.
Community Bonds Strengthened
Perhaps more important than the money was the relationships forged that day. Australians who had never met a Ukrainian learned about our culture, our history, our values. Ukrainians who had been isolated found connections with people who genuinely wanted to help. The gathering built bridges that would long outlast the event itself.
A Statement to the World
Perhaps most importantly, "Darwin Stands with Ukraine" sent a message to the world: Australia is not indifferent. The Northern Territory, far from the centers of power in Sydney and Melbourne, cares about what happens in Ukraine. The people here understand what it means to fight for freedom, to preserve culture against overwhelming odds, to maintain hope when hope seems impossible.
The Work Continues
This gathering was not an ending but a beginning. UAANT remains committed to the ongoing work of supporting Ukraine and the Ukrainian community in Australia:
- Advocacy: Continuing to lobby government for support for Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees
- Community: Providing services and connections for Ukrainians in the Northern Territory
- Education: Helping Australians understand Ukraine's history, culture, and current situation
- Aid: Sending humanitarian assistance to those who need it most
We Will Not Forget
As the crowd dispersed and the sun set over Darwin Harbour, there was a sense that something meaningful had happened. Not just a rally, not just a fundraiser—a genuine coming together of communities who had chosen solidarity over indifference.
The flags would eventually be taken down, the candles would burn out, the sounds of music would fade. But the connections made, the promises spoken, the unity demonstrated—these would endure.
Ukrainians in Darwin know we are not alone. Australians in Darwin know their voices matter. And Ukraine, fighting for its survival thousands of kilometres away, knows that in Australia's tropical north, people are standing with them.
