Celebrating International Women's Day 2025 in Darwin
UAANT joins the global celebration of International Women's Day 2025 in Darwin, honoring Ukrainian women's contributions
She Who Dares: Celebrating Ukrainian Women in Darwin
The sound of women's laughter filled the venue as the Ukrainian-Australian Association of the Northern Territory gathered to celebrate International Women's Day 2025. But this was no ordinary celebration—it was a tribute to extraordinary women who had crossed oceans, left behind everything familiar, and built new lives while keeping the flame of Ukrainian heritage burning bright.
The Courage to Start Over
Every woman in that room carried a story of courage that would inspire generations. Some had arrived in Australia with nothing but the clothes on their backs, fleeing conflict that had destroyed their homes and upended their lives. Others had come as part of family units, suddenly finding themselves responsible for preserving cultural traditions in an unfamiliar land while navigating the complexities of a new country's systems and customs.
International Women's Day took on profound meaning for these women. In Ukraine, March 8th has long been a day of celebration—flowers, chocolates, and expressions of appreciation for the women who form the backbone of Ukrainian society. But for Ukrainian women in Australia, this day carries additional weight. It is a recognition of the extraordinary resilience required to rebuild one's life in a foreign country while maintaining the cultural identity that defines who we are.
Champions of Heritage
The celebration honored women who have gone above and beyond in preserving Ukrainian culture for the next generation. These cultural guardians have organized language lessons for children, taught traditional embroidery to interested Australians, prepared elaborate holiday feasts for the entire community, and ensured that Ukrainian traditions continue to thrive thousands of kilometres from home.
One such champion is Olena, who has spent countless hours teaching Ukrainian dance to children in Darwin. When she first arrived in the Northern Territory, there were no Ukrainian dance groups, no cultural classes, nothing to connect young Ukrainians to their heritage. Rather than accept this reality, she gathered a few interested families in her living room and began teaching basic steps. Today, her students perform at community events throughout the Territory, their colorful outfits and energetic performances drawing applause from Australians who have never seen Ukrainian dance before.
Another honoree, Maria, has made it her mission to ensure that no Ukrainian family in the Northern Territory feels alone. When new arrivals come to Darwin—with all the disorientation and challenges that entails—she is there to meet them at the airport, to help them navigate Centrelink and housing applications, to invite them into her home for traditional Ukrainian meals until they find their footing. Her generosity has touched dozens of families, giving them the support they need to successfully establish new lives in Australia.
The Weight They Carry
The celebration also acknowledged the invisible labor that often goes unrecognized—the emotional work of maintaining family connections across continents, the late nights spent helping children with homework in a language still new to them, the moments of grief when missing homeland celebrations or family milestones becomes unbearable.
Ukrainian women in the diaspora carry a unique burden. They are often the family historians, the keepers of traditions, the ones responsible for ensuring that their children know where they come from. This responsibility falls heavily on their shoulders, yet they carry it with grace and determination.
"I sometimes feel like I'm living in two worlds," one attendee shared. "My heart is in Ukraine, with my parents and siblings who are still there. But my hands are here, building a life for my children. International Women's Day reminds me that this—this impossible, beautiful, exhausting balancing act—is something to be proud of."
A Sisterhood Across Borders
The event brought together women of different generations, backgrounds, and circumstances—but united by their shared experience as Ukrainian women abroad. Young mothers compared notes on raising bilingual children. Established community members offered advice to newcomers. Elderly women who had been in Australia for decades shared stories of their own journeys, offering hope to those just starting out.
This sisterhood is one of the most valuable gifts of the Ukrainian diaspora. In a country where we are a small minority, where Ukrainian churches and community centres are rare, where our children may be the only Ukrainian students in their schools—knowing that other women share your experiences, understand your challenges, and celebrate your victories makes all the difference.
Looking to Tomorrow
As the celebration concluded, there was a sense of renewed purpose. The women who gathered in Darwin on International Women's Day 2025 recognized that they were not just celebrating the achievements of the past, but committing to supporting one another in the years ahead.
UAANT remains dedicated to creating spaces where Ukrainian women can connect, share their experiences, and find the support they need. Whether through regular community gatherings, mentorship programs for newcomers, or simply providing a platform for women's voices to be heard—the association is committed to ensuring that every Ukrainian woman in the Northern Territory knows she is valued, supported, and never alone.
The strength of Ukrainian women has carried our nation through centuries of challenges—from Tsarist oppression to Soviet domination, from the horrors of World War II to the current struggle for freedom. In Australia, that strength continues to build our community, preserve our culture, and inspire future generations.
To every Ukrainian woman—here in Darwin and across the diaspora—happy International Women's Day. Your courage inspires us all.
