Celebrating Our Heritage with the NT Government at Parliament House
For the second year running, UAANT was honoured to attend a reception hosted by Minister Jinson Charls MLA at Parliament House, marking the beginning of Orthodox Great Lent.
A Special Evening at Parliament House
What a truly special evening at Parliament House! On 4 March 2026, our community was once again honoured to attend a reception hosted by Minister Jinson Charls MLA — and this year it felt even more meaningful, knowing that this tradition is taking root.
It was wonderful to see other communities coming together as part of this important Orthodox event, sharing in the spirit of unity and faith.

The Beginning of Orthodox Great Lent
The reception marked the beginning of Orthodox Great Lent, celebrating the rich traditions that make the Northern Territory so vibrant and diverse. Great Lent is the most solemn and spiritually significant fasting period in the Orthodox calendar — a season of reflection, prayer, and renewal that leads to Pascha (Easter).
For Ukrainian families in Darwin, these traditions are close to the heart. They connect our community to generations of faith and culture, kept alive even far from home.

Ukrainian Culture Acknowledged at the Highest Level
It was especially heartening to see our Ukrainian culture and faith acknowledged at such a high level. Events like this remind us that our heritage is not only something we carry quietly within our families — it is recognised, respected, and welcomed as part of the Territory's diverse community fabric.

Standing Together
We are incredibly proud to share our heritage with the wider Territory family and to stand alongside other Orthodox communities in this meaningful celebration. Seeing Ukrainian vyshyvanky (embroidered shirts) alongside the traditional dress of other communities was a beautiful reminder: faith and culture bring people together.

Thank you to Minister Jinson Charls MLA and the NT Government for hosting this reception and for your continued recognition of our community.
Слава Україні!
