XXIX AFUO Conference Triennial General Meeting: A Historic Milestone
UAANT makes history with first official representation at the XXIX Congress of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations in Melbourne
A Historic Journey: When Darwin Joined the National Conversation
The bustling streets of Melbourne welcomed delegates from across Australia in March 2025, but among the crowds gathered at the XXIX Congress of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO), there was a particular sense of anticipation. For the very first time, the Ukrainian-Australian Association of the Northern Territory (UAANT) would have official representation at this prestigious gathering—a milestone that represented years of building, connecting, and advocating for our community.
The Road to Melbourne
For the Ukrainian community in the Northern Territory, this moment had been a long time coming. The challenges of maintaining Ukrainian identity in one of Australia's most remote and sparsely populated regions have been significant—geographic isolation, smaller community numbers, and limited resources compared to the larger Ukrainian populations in Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide.
Yet UAANT has always believed that every voice matters, regardless of location. The journey to that Melbourne conference began with countless hours of community organizing, advocacy work, and building relationships with other Ukrainian organisations across the country. Delegates who made the journey from Darwin carried with them not just their own experiences, but the hopes and concerns of every Ukrainian family living in the Northern Territory—from the tropical shores of Darwin to the remote communities of Katherine and Tennant Creek.
A Gathering of Unity
The AFUO Congress brought together Ukrainian community leaders from every corner of Australia—from the Ukrainian churches of Perth to the cultural centres of Brisbane, from the community halls of Adelaide to the bustling meeting rooms of Sydney's Ukrainian Precinct. This triennial gathering represents the highest level of organizational collaboration within the Ukrainian-Australian community, and the decisions made here shape the direction of Ukrainian advocacy efforts nationwide.
For UAANT's delegates, being part of this national conversation was both humbling and empowering. They sat alongside veterans of Ukrainian community work who had been fighting for Ukrainian rights for decades, learning from their experience while also contributing fresh perspectives from the unique challenges and opportunities of life in Australia's north.
What We Achieved Together
The conference tackled several critical issues affecting Ukrainians across Australia, and UAANT's participation ensured that the Northern Territory perspective was heard:
Speaking for the Unheard
One of the most important contributions UAANT brought to the conference was awareness of the unique challenges faced by Ukrainians in remote and regional areas. Unlike their counterparts in major cities, Ukrainians in the Northern Territory often have limited access to community services, cultural events, and support networks. Our delegates shared stories of families driving hundreds of kilometres to attend community gatherings, of children growing up without Ukrainian-language schools, and of the isolation that can accompany life in remote Australia.
This advocacy led to important discussions about how to better serve regional Ukrainian communities—discussions that will shape support programs for years to come.
Building Bridges Across Borders
The conference also provided invaluable opportunities to strengthen connections between Ukrainian communities. UAANT representatives met with counterparts from every state, sharing best practices and exploring ways to collaborate on advocacy initiatives. These relationships are crucial—when we speak with one unified voice, our message to government and the broader Australian public is far more powerful.
Cultural Preservation
The importance of maintaining Ukrainian culture and language in the diaspora was a major theme throughout the conference. UAANT shared its experiences with cultural events in Darwin, including our annual celebrations of Ukrainian Independence Day, Easter traditions, and Christmas festivities. These exchanges of ideas will help all communities strengthen their cultural programming.
The Power of Representation
Perhaps most significantly, UAANT's participation ensured that policy discussions would consider the needs of Northern Territory Ukrainians. Federal government initiatives, immigration policies, and community funding programs all affect Ukrainians in the Territory—but without representation at the national level, our community's voice was often lost.
Now, when AFUO meets with government officials, when they submit policy recommendations, when they advocate for humanitarian visa holders—the Northern Territory perspective is included. This representation opens doors to opportunities that simply didn't exist before.
A Foundation for the Future
This first official representation at the AFUO Congress marks the beginning of a new chapter for UAANT and the Northern Territory Ukrainian community. We have established ourselves as active participants in the national conversation, not just passive recipients of decisions made in Sydney or Melbourne.
The relationships built in Melbourne will continue to bear fruit in the years ahead. UAANT is now connected with advocacy networks across Australia, giving our community access to resources, expertise, and support that would have been impossible to reach before.
Looking Forward
As our delegates returned to Darwin, they carried with them not just memories of a successful conference, but a renewed sense of purpose. The Ukrainian community in the Northern Territory may be smaller than those in major cities, but we are no less important. Our voice matters. Our culture matters. Our community matters.
UAANT remains committed to continuing this important work—advocating for Ukrainians in the Northern Territory, preserving our cultural heritage, and building connections that strengthen our community both locally and nationally.
Together with our fellow Ukrainians across Australia, we are building something meaningful. The XXIX AFUO Congress was not just a milestone—it was the beginning of a new era of Ukrainian-Australian unity.
